Please Welcome Jackson, the First Orange Boot Baby!

If you are a Saturday regular at Orange Boot, you have likely noticed two things:   our awesome front counter person Amy’s tummy has been growing quite a bit over the past several months; and Amy hasn’t been at work for a the past month or so.  Well we are pleased to inform you that little Jackson Bonsor was born last week.   7lbs, 13oz.  Healthy as can be.

We get a great thrill from all the new Moms who come into the bakery with their cute babies.  It’s so cool to watch the seasons change outside and watch the babies grow a little more every time we see them.  But this is the first time we’ve ever had an Orange Boot employee have a baby, so in our own weird way we all feel like surrogate Aunts and Uncles.

It’s a little too soon to tell whether Jackson like bread but we assume he’ll love it once he gets a little bigger.  Let’s just say that Jackson won’t go without good baking as he get older.

Dennis Bergkamp Never Won The World Cup

But we named the bakery after him anyway.

It’s fair to say that I’m a soccer fanatic.  For me it started in the summer of 1994, the year the USA hosted the World Cup and TSN decided to carry all 64 games live.  I bought a set of 8 hour VHS tapes, queued up the VCR and taped, and watched every single game.  I was hooked!

What characters!  Carlos Valderrama of Columbia, with his crazy huge afro. Gheorghe Hagi of Romania, who was this little guy but was a magician with the ball.  Romario and Bebeto, diminutive strikers from Brazil.   Roberto Baggio, who broke Italian hearts in the final and who to this day reminds me of Carlo from Italian Star Deli.

But it was the Dutch, with their orange and black uniforms and open playing style, who captured my heart.  And Dennis Bergkamp was the player who stuck out for me.

Dennis played well in 94, scoring in the quarter final against eventual champions Brazil,  but he cemented his place in my heart in 1998 in France.  There, in the semi finals against Argentina, Dennis Bergkamp scored the greatest World Cup goal I’ve ever seen.  With mere minutes left in a 1-1 match, Frank de Boer sent a 60 yard pass toward Dennis, who took the ball perfectly, played it between the defenders legs, back toward the next, turned again and scored from a near impossible angle.  The perfect goal and the game was won!

Here’s the goal if you can’t quite remember it.  Gotta love the Dutch commentator in this clip!

And if that wasn’t enough, The Guardian has re-enacted this famous goal with Lego!

Netherlands beat Argentina 2-1 in the 1998 quarter finals and nearly got past Brazil in the semi’s, but lost in a penalty shoot out.  And that was the end of World Cup football for Dennis Bergkamp.  But by that point I learned that Bergkamp played his club football at Arsenal so I got to follow his exploits for the Gunners (in print anyway; Dennis had retired before I could get dodgy internet feeds of Arsenal games in the mid-2000’s.)

When it came time to open our bakery on Gordon Road, we needed a name.  Once we decided we didn’t want a super serious name like Waving Wheat or Staff of Life or the You’ll Love Yourself If You Eat Bread From Here Bakery, it didn’t take too long before football, and Holland and Dennis seeped into my brain.  Hmmm…Orange…Orange Boot….Orange Boot!  That’s it!

I’m sure there’s lots of other connections I could use to justify the name (The Old Boot Italian restaurant in Sechelt BC comes to mind) but deep down, Dennis Bergkamp is the Big One.

These days there’s a ton of soccer on TV.  I can watch every Arsenal game, Champions League games with the best teams in Europe, MLS games from Canada and the USA and, of course, World Cup games.  I haven’t missed a single World Cup game since 1994, even when we were travelling.  Last time round, in 2010, while the World Cup was being played in South Africa, our family was travelling in the Maritimes.  Ben and I found a great restaurant with a big screen projector in a tent next door.  We watched the Holland – Brazil quarter final, Holland – Uruguay semi final and the Germany – Spain semi final (Ben’s a big fan of Germany.)  And we all huddled in a motel room in Wolfville, NS to watch Holland lose to Spain in the final.  I was heartbroken, then felt a little betrayed to learn Cindy, Ben and Robyn were quietly cheering for Spain!

And this Friday, it starts again.  The World Cup. From Brazil, no less.  Holland plays Spain in the opening weekend.   I’m so excited!

I don’t need VHS tapes any more, but my PVR is primed and ready.  I’m determined to stay caught up with the games so we can chat and bug each other during the tournament.  I don’t think my Dutch boys will make it to the final this year, but they might.  If they’re still alive in July I’ll be thrilled.

So you may see a little extra Orange at the bakery this month.  Cindy might even be making some special World Cup cookies.  If you’ve got a favourite team, be sure to let me know – it’ll be nice to meet fellow football fans.

And if you’ve got any Panini stickers to trade, let me know.  I’ll trade sticker for sticker, or even stickers for cookies.  I’m filling my sticker album for the first time this year and am having a blast!

Can I Bake in a Wheelchair?

I’m just barely getting the hang of loading the oven on my feet.  But next week I’ll be doing this from a wheelchair.

When the Canadian Paraplegic Association became our new neighbours last year I started to think a lot more about the challenges of living and working in a wheelchair.  Those cracks in our sidewalks looked bigger.  So did the potholes in our parking lot and our “blowin’ in the wind” front door.   So when Sheila asked me to be a Chair Leader on May 7, I said Yes right away.  I want to show just how much I can (or can’t) accomplish in a normal baking shift.

  • Can I reach the bench to shape dough?
  • Can I load the oven?  Do dishes?
  • What if I’m a customer?  Can I actually navigate the new ramp our landlord put in last summer?  Can I make it along the sidewalk?
  • I usually have a delivery to make on Wednesdays.  How is that going to work?

Oh dear.  This really will be a challenge.

But that’s the point of the whole event.  To raise awareness of what people with spinal cord injuries have to deal with every day.  And to shine a light on what needs to be fixed so everyone can get around barrier free.

So come see how I do on the morning of May 7.  But more importantly, please donate now.   I know I’m going to screw up lots and find a hundred things that need fixing.  And there’s a thousand other things that need fixing around Saskatchewan to make the province more accessible.  That’s what the Paraplegic Association does — they help people with spinal cord injuries find accessible housing, get to work, and work in accessible workplaces.  Your donation will help the CPA provide even more services to folks right here in Saskatchewan.

Tell your friends that you helped us out and get them to help us out too.  Tweet, Facebook, Tumble or Stumble.  Come Snapchat or Instagram or Pin as I struggle through a bake shift.  Whatever it takes.  But donate now.  Thanks.

Will You Be the Next Orange Boot Baker?

Want to work with this bevy of amazing of bakers?  Now’s your chance!

Probably the biggest thing I’ve learned over the years at Orange Boot Bakery is how crucial it is to build a strong, energetic team to work with every day.  Our current bake crew is exactly that.  I’m so lucky to be able to work with Teisha, Sandy, Sheraea and Kim every day.  Not only are they talented bakers, with a love of their craft and excellent hand skills, but they are so much fun to work with too.  It’s a joy to come into the bakery every morning knowing I get to work with them.

There’s a downside to this, however.  When you hire great people, their lives are full of adventure and sometimes they have to move on.  Sheraea is getting married soon and next month is moving to be closer to her new husband.  We’re going to miss her calm smile, her eagerness to try new things and her mad oven skillz.

So we’re hiring again. Very quickly, since we need to replace Sheraea, but very slowly, because we’re looking for the Right Person.  The Next Orange Boot Baker:

  • is excited about bringing joy to hundreds of people every week through the food he/she makes in the morning
  • loves hard, physical, fast paced work if that’s what is needed to make the best baking for people
  • is enthusiastic and full of energy, even before sunrise
  • loves working as part of a highly motivated team
  • is willing to learn in the name of creating the best baked goods in the world

The Next Orange Boot Baker may have some pastry school cred, or previous professional baking experience, but it’s not necessary.  What’s necessary is the overwhelming desire to create something truly remarkable.

Does this describe you, or someone you know?  Then we need to talk.

Call Mark or Cindy at (306) 584-2668 (mention you’re calling about the baker position), come into the bakery in person Tuesday – Saturday between 8AM and 2pm, or apply online here.
